ABORTIONS DURING PREGNANCY

Abortion means ending a pregnancy before the fetus (unborn child) can live independently outside the mother. When abortion occurs spontaneously before 24 weeks of pregnancy, it is called a miscarriage. An induced (or "therapeutic") abortion is caused intentionally to terminate the pregnancy.

Abortions are (most secure) done in the first trimester (before the 12th week of pregnancy). Week of pregnancy are counted from the first day of the most recent of the female menstruation. The type of abortion depends on how far the pregnancy has progressed.

There are a number of procedures, including medical and surgical abortions.
